In a previous Look Into ASL Studies article, we covered how to become an ASL interpreter, mentioning that no person’s journey to becoming an interpreter looks the same, but they all include patience, persistence, dedication, professional training, and practice.

We’ve put a few steps in the process into an infographic below. But remember, meeting with your advisor to establish your own personal course of action to meet your specific goals is always a good idea.

The steps to becoming an American Sign Language interpreter begin with a passion for communication and deaf culture – the best in the ASL field are always practicing, building upon their skills, knowledge and vocabulary. ASL interpreters combine educational programs, real-world experience and state and national certification to become a strong advocate for hard-of-hearing individuals across fields – e.g. performance, legal, medical and educational.
