American Sign Language mission of new trailblazing restaurant

William Woods ASL

A new Toronto restaurant reminds us that disability really is a matter of perspective. In the mostly hearing world of dining, Signs stands out as the only known restaurant that employs deaf waiters and encourages customers to order in American Sign Language.

Signs is the brainchild of Anjan Manikumar, who began to learn ASL while managing a pizza restaurant frequented by a deaf customer. The customer’s reaction to Manikumar starting to learn inspired him to expand his knowledge of ASL and further find a way to encourage hearing individuals to learn as well.

The William Woods University online ASL Degree recognizes the need for both Deaf  and hearing persons to master more than a language.
